century there were two main gunsmiths who specialised in duelling
pistols, Robert Wogdon and John Barton. Wogdon was well established by the time
Barton came along in the 1790s. He soon realised that the young Barton
was very competent and a threat to his business and set about making him a
partner. Robert Wogdon was born in 1724, apprentice 1748, gunmaker at
Cockspur St. then Charing Cross in 1764. Moved to 14 The Haymarket in
1774. He joined John Barton in 1795 to become Wogdon and Barton until 1802
when Wogdon retired and passed away in 1803 aged 79. John Barton carried on
the business from 1803 until 1816 at 14 The Haymarket. Then from 1816-1819 at
5 St. James Street, Haymarket, from where he retired.
